Hello to all the affiliates of the new Special Interest Group (SIG) 17! As the current Coordinator for SIG 17, Global Issues in Communication Sciences and Related Disorders, I want to welcome each and every one of you to this second Coordinator's Column of our second Perspectives, as well as to membership in SIG 17, Global Issues in Communication Sciences and Related Disorders. Although SIG 17 represents a diverse group in terms of professional settings, ages, experiences, and personal viewpoints, there is one thread of commonality: an interest in communications disorders issues from a global or worldwide perspective.
At the ASHA Convention, ASHA's Special Interest program celebrates its 20 year anniversary! I urge you to attend the SIG reception. The 2011 Board of Directors approval of a plan to restructure the program will facilitate greater community interaction, collaboration, and integration to align SIG activities with ASHA's strategic plan (Strategic Pathway to Excellence, www.asha.org/about/pathway/). SIG affiliates' expertise will be tapped by ASHA committees and boards, ASHA Professional Development, ASHA's mentoring program, ASHA development practice documents initiatives, and Association advocacy initiatives.
